The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route”, is the oldest and most popular path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is considered the easiest option for beginners because the trail is less steep compared to other routes. One of its main advantages is that it offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it more comfortable for climbers who prefer basic shelter.
The route usually takes 5 to 6 days, which makes it cheaper and shorter. However, the limited number of days means less time for acclimatization, which lowers the summit success rate. Marangu is also the busiest route, attracting many climbers each year, so it can feel crowded.
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route”, is another popular choice but slightly more challenging. It is longer, usually taking 6 to 7 days, which gives climbers more time to adjust to the altitude, leading to a higher summit success rate than Marangu.
The route is known for its beautiful scenery, as it passes through rainforest, moorlands, valleys, and glaciers. Unlike Marangu, there are no huts on this path, so climbers must camp along the way, which requires more preparation and offers less comfort.![]()
